Things To Do - January 2024

London continues to buzz with energy and excitement, offering a fresh start to the year with a host of vibrant activities and celebrations. From exploring the city’s world-renowned museums and galleries, which offer a warm retreat from the winter chill, to experiencing the lively atmosphere of post-holiday markets and winter festivals, there’s no shortage of ways to embrace the new year. Whether you're looking to enjoy the last of the festive lights, participate in New Year’s resolution activities, or simply savor the city's winter charm, January in London promises an array of experiences to kick off the year in style.

While not exclusive to Notting Hill, London's New Year's Day Parade features performers from all over the world passing through nearby areas and is a great way to start the year. The main event starts at Piccadilly near Green Park, and passes through several major landmarks including regents street, pall mall, trafalgar square & whitehall. It finishes near parliament street.

Event Highlights

  • Parade Route: The parade begins at noon and moves through central London, starting at Piccadilly and proceeds along a route that includes Regent Street, Oxford Circus, and down towards Whitehall. The route offers prime viewing spots for spectators along the way.

  • Participants: The parade features a diverse mix of participants, including marching bands, dance troupes, acrobats, and colorful floats. Performers from various countries contribute to the international flair of the event.

  • Entertainment: Spectators can enjoy a blend of music, dance, and theatrical performances, creating a lively and festive atmosphere. The parade highlights the cultural richness and creativity of the participants, making it a dynamic celebration of the new year.

  • Viewing and Accessibility: Prime viewing areas are located along the parade route, with some sections offering designated spaces for accessible viewing. Early arrival is recommended to secure a good spot, especially in popular areas like Piccadilly and Regent Street.

The post-Christmas sales extend into January, and Notting Hill’s boutique shops, particularly around Portobello Road, often have great discounts. It's a good time for shopping enthusiasts to explore the unique offerings of local fashion stores and antique shops. January is a good time to explore the scene without the hustle and bustle of peak tourist seasons; we recommend visiting Portobello Road Market

Highlights at Portobello Road:

  • Antique and Vintage Shopping: January is an excellent time to explore Portobello Road’s renowned antique and vintage shops. With fewer crowds, you can enjoy a more relaxed shopping experience and find unique treasures, from vintage clothing to rare antiques.

  • Local Cafés and Restaurants: Warm up in one of Portobello Road’s cozy cafés or restaurants. January is perfect for enjoying a leisurely brunch or a comforting meal, with many eateries offering seasonal menus and a welcoming atmosphere.

  • Cultural Exploration: The area is home to various cultural landmarks and galleries. Spend time visiting local art galleries and cultural spots, which often feature intriguing exhibitions and community events.

  • Winter Markets: Although the festive Christmas markets have ended, Portobello Road still hosts a range of markets and stalls offering fresh produce, artisanal goods, and unique crafts. It’s a great opportunity to support local vendors and enjoy the slower pace of the new year.

While there are countless ways to embrace the new year, these activities stand out as our personal favorites for making the most of January. Whether you’re visiting for the New Year celebrations, winter sales, or a quiet stroll through the market, Notting Hill provides a charming winter experience. Our reception staff are always available to assist you with up-to-date information on local events and hidden gems, ensuring you have the best possible experience during your stay.
